Every team nowadays has a "sitting" midfield player, In fact some teams have two in a midfield four! I cannot stand it. Take turns to go forward, defend when you have to.
So, did Spain have a "holding" midfielder? Yes, Senna. So what is the difference?
As Brazil have done through the years, Spain had a player in front of the two centre-backs but they do not ask their full-backs to tuck in and cover, in fact they scarcely ask them to defend!! Remember Cafu and Roberto Carlos?
So the full-backs are encouraged to bomb forward and become midfielders or even wingers, leaving the two at the back to do what they are paid to do i.e. defend with a bit of help from Senna.
The difference? Some of our teams are playing with five or even six defensive players, whilst Spain play with three.
Simple!!
