Falcons nail-biting finish!

Newcastle Falcons 31 Leicester Tigers 29

What a match! This was an absolutely pulsating game going one way then the other, finally being decided by a magnificent 52 yard kick from Tony Flood with only 60 seconds on the clock.

But the drama did not end there! Flood was then penalised for passing the ball over the dead-ball line.

The 7,500 crowd was stunned until sanity prevailed and the touch-judge confirmed that he had kicked and not passed the ball out of play. Phew!!!!

Throughout the match Tom May and James Grindal constantly probed and kicked to good effect and Woods and Mayerhofler both came close. However it was the visiting fly-half Andy Goode who took centre stage scoring a penalty and then getting the only try of the first half which he duly converted.

Both Flood and Goode slotted two penalties each to make the half-time score 16-6 in favour of the visitors. The Falcons took charge after the break and the impressive Flood jinked past two defenders to score a fine try and added the conversion.

After another Goode penalty, Lloyd scored a converted try to again give the Tigers some breathing space but the never-say- die Falcons came back with not one but two tries from John Rudd.

A further penalty for each side set up the nail-biting finish with Flood stepping up to score that vital penalty in the last minute and set the scene for massive celebrations of a great victory.
