National Geordie Beard Day!

Newcastle Falcons have announced that Sunday December 16 will be ‘National Geordie Beard Day’, in recognition of All Black signing Carl Hayman.

The entire Geordie nation is invited to cast aside its razors for what promises to be a festival of follicles at Kingston Park, with prizes for the top beard and the chance to raise money for The Wooden Spoon.

The Falcons host Irish province Connacht in the European Challenge Cup that day for what could well be Hayman’s home debut, with supporters of all ages and genders invited to join in the stubble spectacular.

“Real men wear beards,” said a bristly Falcons commercial director, Mick Hogan “and National Geordie Beard Day represents a chance for all Falcons followers to welcome Carl Hayman to the north-east in the hairiest way possible!

“Carl’s beard enjoys a cult following in New Zealand, and all Falcons supporters are urged to bin their Bics and jettison their Gillettes in the lead-up to the game, as we welcome our new hirsute hero.

“Rigorous scientific tests have proved that Carl derives his immense power and scrummaging ability from his trademark beard, and we have received the full support of the National Beard and Moustache Association.

“As well as being a bit of fun, National Geordie Beard Day promises to raise funds for rugby’s very own charity, The Wooden Spoon Society, which does good work throughout the region for disabled and disadvantaged youngsters.”

A number of Falcons players will be getting in on the act with their own weird and wonderful facial furniture, and supporters wishing to help the Wooden Spoon by registering online for the sponsored beard growing competition can do so from next week on the official Falcons website.

Insisting that age and gender will be no barrier, Hogan added: “Kids and women are invited to join in the fun, with stick-ons available on the day for what promises to be a beardy bonanza!”
