Steve Jones Joins falcons
Newcastle Falcons have announced the signing of Steve Jones from Border Reivers in a two-year deal.
The 24-year-old can play at either fly-half or fullback, and returns to Kingston Park having spent three seasons with the Falcons academy while studying at Northumbria University.
Jones has made 17 Magners League and four Heineken Cup appearances for Border Reivers so far this season, scoring 32 points.
Born in Ashington, Northumberland, he represented England at Under-18s and 19s level before changing allegiance to Scotland, for whom he played in the IRB Under-21s World Cup.
After three years with the Falcons academy Jones tried his hand at the 13-man game by joining Super League side Huddersfield Giants, before returning to union with Border Reivers last summer.
Falcons director of rugby, John Fletcher, said: “Steve is someone I know very well from his time with us as a youngster, and he has always been a very talented player.
“He offers us quality at both fly half and fullback, as well as a good goal-kicking option, which will be vital for us especially during the international windows when we can expect to be without Jonny Wilkinson and Toby Flood for periods of time.
“Steve has always had bags of potential, and his time at Borders even during a difficult season has been good for him because it has given him the big-match experience which was always going to help his development.”
Speaking after completing his move back to Kingston Park, Jones said: “When the chance came up to work with John Fletcher again, I was determined to seize it with both hands.
“Newcastle has always been an exciting club, and with the current squad building for the future I’m looking forward to being part of it again.”
