Thee Rough Lads these Ruggers Lads!!!

As Jim Royle of "The Royle family" would say, "Friendly.....my arse!"

I was invited along to the Falcons pre-season "friendly" against newly promoted Doncaster and it was a delight to see these lads give their all and each and every one was desperate to make sure of their place in the starting line-up when the season proper starts.

For the first ten minutes or so the game was played in the Doncaster 22 with the Falcons forwards proving without doubt that they were stronger than the opposition. This allied to some fine play from the backs augurs well for the coming season, especially when Jonny and others were on International duty.

Two things stood out for me and both resulted in tries.

Jamie Noon, not the biggest of men was heading towards the try line with one more man in his way. Not for long! He simply swatted him aside and plunged over in the corner. Great strength and timing.

Then in the second half, the full-back and captain, Matt Burke, timed his run so well that when he received the pass he was in the clear on the half way line and nobody was going to get near him as he touched down under the posts. I always admire top class athletes who make the difficult look easy.

A great day with great entertainment both on the pitch and also behind the scenes where former player big Doddie Weir does a fine job entertaining us all on the mike. I am certainly looking forward to a few more trips to Kingston Park this season.
