Sporting Heroes
Frank Bruno
By Jim Pearson, 4 Jan 2007
Whilst I started off at Nike dealing solely with football as things took shape I got involved in other sports e.g. rugby, cricket, boxing, etc. Our top boxer was the one and only Frank Bruno.
It is hard to believe but he is actually as nice as he comes across--an absolute gentleman.
Anyway one day we were filming him training so he asked me to join in. So we started with a six-mile run then a swim then breakfast. Next, to the gym.
To be frank (spot the pun!) I couldn't fight sleep but I joined in and Frank slaughtered me because I was pathetic at best.
Then it was off to London for a press call and, as we were getting ready, I looked down at Frank's socks and his ankle was really swollen.
When I said that I did not realise he had hurt his ankle , he proceeded to pull out a wad of notes and said, in his own inimitable voice, "Jimmy, you can't be too careful in London these days, there's a lot of mugging going on."
He was deadly serious and although I am quite sure that muggers are not the brightest lamps in the street, if they are going to mug somebody, would they really choose the British Heavyweight Champion!?!
