Sporting Heroes

Irving Nattrass

I still see old "Nat" occasionally and i have played golf with him a couple of times recently. He has a nice little business selling end-of-line clothing and the likes and still works hard.

I still remember the first time I came across him. I was actually playing for Everton against The Toon and I was in direct opposition to one of my best mates, one John Blackley. There is plenty banter on the pitch, some of which is repeatable! Neither "Sloop" as he is known (John B --get it?) or myself were blessed with pace so this long ball goes up Newcastle's left and the two of us are endeavouring to get to it.

As we are "running" along he says to me "Pearie, this is like a f...ing sack-race!' In the meantime some young thoroughbred has flown across from right-back, got the ball and cleared it while we two are still lolloping along, chuckling away. The thoroughbred was Nattrass.
