Sporting Heroes

Peter Osgood

It was a sad day last year when my old mate Peter Osgood passed away. I used to coach on cruises with him and he was fantastic company.

Peter was a great guy who always used to "hold court" with the passengers telling them story after story and entertaining them regally. He was a big celebrity at Stamford Bridge and worked there on match days. Peter had a great story about Seb Coe coming to the match one day.

One day when Peter was working at Chelsea, and with kick-off approaching, an angry Seb Coe stormed past him looking for his tickets from the commissionaire.

"Sorry, sir. No tickets here, they are round the other side of the ground." As it turned out Seb had just been there looking for his ticket and was therefore a very unhappy chappy to be told that’s where his tickets were! "Look, do you know who I am.’ Said Seb, ‘I'm Sebastian Coe"

"Well then’ came the reply, ‘it shouldn't take you long to run round there now sir, should it".
