The week that I signed for Everton was the same week that Bill Shankly left Liverpool. I'll let you guess which was the bigger story!!
Anyway, and quite amazingly, he left Liverpool under a bit of a cloud, so he used to call in to our training ground for a bit of running.
I was injured (again!) and was ready to go for a jog with the physio when Shanks appeared and asked if he could join us. No probs.
It was one of these lovely crisp November mornings and Bill said that he was going to get himself fit.
"When I die" he said, "I want to die fit" in his inimitable harsh Scottish brogue. Followed by, "When I am lying in my coffin, I want to hear everybody say, By f--k, Shanks is looking well today!"
And, do you know what, he really meant it!
