Sporting Heroes

Richard Philip Malone

Better known as big Dick, I met him again recently at a Sunderland ex-players' golf day. Needless to say the year of 1973 was mentioned yet again, and suddenly Bobby Kerr and Richie Pitt were in the conversation as well! They are all great lads and, as ever, we had a right good laugh.

Dick is top-class company and is now a manager in a transport company. "If I played for 6 months nowadays I could retire!" he rightly stated.

During the conversation I remarked on his sun-tan assuming he had been on his holidays. No, just golf, said the hard-working transport company manager!

He went on to explain that he is from Italian descent so goes a dark shade of brown as soon as the sun peeps through. "So you could have played for Italy, Signor Dickie Maloney?" I said, (tongue firmly in cheek).

"If only somebody had told them, he said, "I would have got hundreds of caps because they were crap in my day!"

And he casually walked away!

On checking my records he did get one under-23 cap for Scotland but, as we all know Scotland has always been vastly superior to Italy!!
